When it comes time to select your wedding party attendants, it's always a nice gesture to choose those siblings and friends you are the closest with, as it is often considered an honor to be a member of a wedding party. Today's modern couples are even opting to have children from previous marriages be their attendants, and sometimes even their parents as well. And, although many couples opt for an equal number of bridesmaids and groomsmen, it is not absolutely necessary.
Beyond the nice gesture of asking someone to be an attendant at your wedding, you also want to be sure that you are choosing someone who is willing and able to stand by your side, be your champion, and get things done. This is particularly important when selecting your maid of honor and best man, as they have more duties and responsibilities than other members of the wedding party. You want someone who is reliable, accommodating and helpful, as they can be a great asset with the details of wedding planning.
The number of attendants you choose for your wedding will depend entirely upon the size, style and budget of your wedding. Large, formal weddings are most often composed of a large entourage, and smaller, more intimate weddings will have a significantly smaller number in the wedding party - sometimes only a maid of honor and best man. To avoid things getting out of hand logistically, many professional wedding consultants strongly recommend no more than eight bridesmaids and groomsmen in the wedding party. Remember, you should plan to have at least one usher per every 50 guests - to facilitate smooth guest seating on your wedding day.
It's a good idea to approach potential attendants at least six months before the wedding. You want to give them enough time to adjust their schedules, arrange for travel plans, and have multiple attire fittings.
