diamond clarity

According to industry standards, all diamond grading must done under 10-power magnification. Any flaws that are not detected within this range are considered to be non-existent. Magnification is done using a jeweler’s loupe, which is a small magnifying glass that is specifically designed to view gemstones.

Natural inclusions, such as clouds, feathers, and crystals, will be found in most stones. Clouds are small specks or hazy areas. Feathers are small fractures. Crystals are mineral deposits that are trapped within the diamond. A cloud or feather won’t have much bearing on a grade report, however a crystal does affect the value of the diamond.

Clarity is evaluated on a scale from F to I3:

F
The diamond is flawless and shows no inclusions or blemishes under any magnification.

IF
The diamond has no inclusions when examined by an experienced grader, but will have some minor blemishes.

VVS1, VVS2
Very, very slightly included. The diamond will contain inclusions that are difficult for experienced graders to see under magnification.

VS1, VS2
Very slightly included, meaning that the diamond will contain inclusions such as small crystals, clouds, or feathers when magnified.

SI1, SI2
The diamond contains inclusions that are noticeable to an experienced grader.

I1, I2, I3
The diamond contains inclusions that are obvious under magnification and may affect the brilliance of the diamond.
